The work focuses on the legacies of Ihnat Abziralovich, Belarusian philosopher and cooperative movement activist, who in the beginning of the twentieth century wrote an essay on creativity, cooperative movements, east-west relations and the in-between position of Belarus, opposing both capitalist and authoritarian socialist tendencies.

How did it come about that we don’t work to live but rather live to work, and that we can scarcely imagine other forms of living? Taking inspiration from the famous Marienthal Study, In the meantime, midday comes around revolves around questions like these. The international group exhibition looks at the changes to the field of work in the last decades, made more visible by the Covid-19 pandemic, and considers the modalities of collective action and political imagination such global events carry to affect work.

To approach this set of issues, the artworks in the exhibition oscillate between several thematic zones: crisis and social collapse, alongside both historical and contemporary forms of workers’ collective action and organization, are discussed by Lamin Fofana, Adelita Husni-Bey, Problem Collective, and Bassem Saad. Arts of the Working Class and bare minimum collective deal with other ways of being together, such as social bonds and practices that challenge the centrality of labor and reclaim time as the foundation of freedom, while Vina Yun in collaboration with Tine Fetz, Moshtari Hilal, Sunanda Mesquita & Patu and Ausländer consider labor migration and its prospective planetary character. Moreover, the exhibition also takes a look at the specific conditions of artistic work and praxis — through the presentation of works by the late artist Linda Bilda (who died in 2019), and Eva Egermann’s take on them.

“In the meantime, midday comes around” is a quote taken from a seminal sociological study on unemployment from the 1930s called Marienthal: The Sociography of an Unemployed Communitythat was highly inspirational for this exhibition project. The researchers Marie Jahoda, Paul F. Lazarsfeld, and Hans Zeisel produced the book after several months of study of Marienthal, a district of the community Gramatneusiedl just outside Vienna, which was severely affected by the post-1929 worldwide economic crisis: almost all of its working population became unemployed.

Conflicts at art schools in Central and Eastern Europe result, on the one hand, from their inherited feudal and patriarchal structures and, on the other hand, from the post-transformation offensive of neoliberal practices. Nowadays, these problems are additionally confronted with attempts by increasingly authoritarian governments to limit the autonomy of universities and academies. And so, more and more often, we face not only the question of whether it is worthwhile to defend hierarchical structures from commercialization but also, in the face of authoritarian tendencies of those in power, whether we are doomed to fight to maintain the status quo?

Are different institutions possible? And if not, what could alternative models of artistic education look like? In the introduction to the Polish edition of Ivan Illich’s De-Schooling Society, Piotr Laskowski asks: “is it possible to create a school that is not an institution but a community based on friendship? […] A community free from grades, exams, compulsory programs; a non-institutionalized community, non-hierarchical, free of paternalism, self-governed, open and inclusive, but at the same time a community whose participants take care of each other and pull each other towards reading and action?”

This exhibition presents artworks and practices that confront the problems of institutions, the revolts of academic communities, and initiatives that combat their pathologies. For six weeks, the Deschool! project will also be implementing alternative educational projects by artists and their self-study groups, grassroots collective practices of knowledge sharing, and community-based learning and creation.

Problem Collective presents an exhibition of Information Stands and a performative reading session at The Promise of Kneropy’s reading room. As a part of Beuys will be Beuys, a year-long festival initiated by Goethe-Institut Bratislava and commemorating Joseph Beuys's 100 anniversary, Problem Collective tells the aesthetic and political history of striking in the heat of the moment during the social uprising in Belarus 2020-21 and its deep history.

Thinking about the representation of strikes in the historical perspective, Problem Collective juxtaposes it with the contemporary strikes in Belarus. In 2020-21 many factories, universities, cultural institutions, and companies have been striking against police and state violence. Being silenced by the official media, the strike manifested itself through low-quality images, public statements, insider reports, employees' dismissals, and arrests, chants, and banners. The visual form selected by the collective is an information board that is a very popular didactic tool in educational facilities, libraries, and factories for the dissemination of information.

	Information Boards

Problem Collective — an artistic and research collective from Minsk — juxtaposes strikes in the historical perspective with the modern day strikes in Belarus. Many factories, universities, cultural institutions and companies are striking against police and state violence. Not reported by the official media, the strike manifests through low quality images, public statements, insider reports, employees’ dismissals and arrests, chants and banners. The visual form chosen by the collective is an information board or stand — a popular tool used in schools, libraries and factories to disseminate information.

Every stand is dedicated to a specific theme related to the possibilities and political potential of a strike. “Information Board 1” makes reference to the relationship

between the movement of workers, extraction of natural resources and the notion of “the commons.” “Information Board 2” reflects on a strike in a library — by both librarians, the lowest paid job in the country, readers and possibly even the books themselves. “Information Board 3” emphasizes the importance of a feminist strike and invisible care work. During a recent visit to the National Library of Belarus, one of the Collective’s members asked one of the workers if they had been on strike, and she replied, “Oh, even if we were striking, nobody would have probably noticed.” Problem Collective searches for visual imagery — abstract and concrete, figurative and realistic — of several important historical strikes and compares them with the strikes of 2020 and 2021.

Mint presents A Careful Strike*; a group show that departs from the monumental painting The History of the Workers Movement by the sheet metal worker, musician and artist Ruben Nilson (1893–1971), permanently installed at ABF Stockholm. Painted during a ten year period around 1940. Following a tradition of workers’ art, the collective struggle for emancipation is at the centre of Nilson’s painting. The exhibition follows Nilson’s artwork both in its ambition and challenge: What does the reproduction of a movement’s history entail? What different roles can art play in social movements and through which expressions? How is art engaged in today’s movements? A dialogue with the specific struggles and the histories that inform Nilson’s composition of intertwined visual narratives, structured through visible conjoined cuts form the curatorial framework of the exhibition. The work’s historical connections to contemporary situations are put in relation to what is missing within the frame – the histories and experiences that are left out while establishing a prevalent worker’s history.A Careful Strike* is an exhibition and a public program (that preceded the exhibition during the fall of 2020), where workers’ art is confronted with Swedish and international contemporary works. The form and history of social movements are reflected through situated experiences of migration, care, exploitation and struggle. Through songs, poetry, talks, and artworks historical events and issues are made visible in a conversation on our current condition. What do we need to remember and what is to be done to win back the future?*The exhibition borrows its title from the militant feminist collective Precarias a la deriva (Precarious women adrift) 2004. The collective was formed in Madrid in 2002 in reaction to the male-dominated unions that were organising a general strike in reaction to labour law reforms in Spain. Precarias a la deriva wanted to highlight the challenges many face in participating in strikes, due to a reality of precarious employment and a higher burden of reproductive work. They wanted to create a collective situated narrative on the general tendency toward the precarization of life they were experiencing and the ways to revolt and resist in our everyday lives. – Precarias a la deriva, Una huelga de mucho cuidado (Cuatro hipótesis), 2004.

The exhibition is produced with generous support from The Worker Movement’s Culture Fund, The Swedish Arts Council and The City of Stockholm.

	The Method of Reading

Problem Collective inspired by and deconstructing the methods of the early Soviet reading groups aimed at self-education of peasants and workers, and also discussing contemporary state of reading and text, the “Problem Collective” invites to the session of collective reading. The PC offers to read the “List of MOPR Pavilion Exhibits” — a historical document found in the national archives of the Republic of Belarus. The document lists the exhibits that were placed in the MOPR Pavilion at the First All-Belarusian Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition in Minsk (1930). The MOPR Pavilion was built and designed by the artist and constructor Aleksanteri Ahola-Valo, who in the experimental display recorded the history of political violence.

2018 WORK HARD! PLAY HARD! invites you to join a week of events from 25 June to 1 July where we will navigate along the axes of several “parameters”, physical and conceptual spaces, the logics of temporality and themes. The system of parameters is rather flexible, referring to cross pollination, a cube-rubik or kaleidoscope: extensions, national academy of sciences as witch, High-Tech Park, pharmachoreography, places of transparency, political dancefloor, protocols of self-organisation, sanatorium, self-destructing structures, speculative synthesis, terror of relationship, tongue and teeth of creativity, etc.

In the meantime, midday comes around

How did it come about that we don’t work to live but rather live to work, and that we can scarcely imagine other forms of living? Taking inspiration from the famous Marienthal Study, In the meantime, midday comes around revolves around questions like these.
